evie needs someone to act as her girlfriend when doug won’t take the hint. unfortunately, most auradon girls are still avoiding her like the plague, so she has only one option: mal, her best friend in the whole world, is going to have to become mal, her (fake) girlfriend. everything goes perfectly for a while, until word travels that prince ben is interested in mal. evie, believing that it will make mal happy, sets her free to be with him; unbeknownst to her, however, mal has been in love with someone else for quite a while now (hint: it’s a certain blue-haired fashionista who is jarringly oblivious to these things). after a hard split with ben, mal feels out-of-place and alienated in auradon and begins retreating from her friends. evie’s quest to make her best friend happy leads her to one startling but undeniable conclusion about her best friend’s feelings - as well as her own.
